Alliance and Leicester PPI Complaints
If you have ever had a credit card then it is likely that at some point you may have incurred a penalty charge for accidentally exceeding your limit or making a late payment. In 2006, the Office of Fair Trading investigated these kinds of charges. It was discovered that some lenders were charging customers as much as £35 on each occasion they exceeded a limit or made a late payment. For some customers this led to an unfortunate situation where they just fell further and further into debt.
After a thorough review, the Office of Fair Trading decided that the maximum charge that should be applied for these kind of fees was £12. This amount took into consideration postage, staffing costs and some contribution toward IT systems. Although most lenders have lowered their fees in light of the investigation, many customers were still angry that they had paid fees for years that had been found to be unfair. As a consequence, unhappy customers now have the right to make a complaint and could receive a refund.
Also in 2006 the Office of Fair Trading and the Financial Services Authority investigated the sale of payment protection insurance. They found failures across the industry and, as a consequence, several lenders faced substantial fines. One of these lenders was Alliance and Leicester who was fined £7 million after it was found they had put some customers under undue pressure to take out the cover. The fine related to telephone sales between January 2005 and December 2007 and led to a huge uplift in the number of customers making Alliance and Leicester PPI complaints.
If you have payment protection cover there are several key ways in which the policy may have been mis-sold to you. This can include the cover being added without your knowledge, the cover being sold without the terms and conditions being explained or the full costs not being made clear. You may also have been mis-sold a policy if you were offered the insurance despite being in some way unsuitable – for example if you were retired or self-employed.
