Black Horse Loan Protection

Loan protection cover is a type of payment protection insurance sold with loans and mortgages. Up until recently it was phenomenally popular and was sold extensively by finance companies, banks and brokers across the lending world. Following a high profile investigation by the Financial Services Authority; however, loan protection cover has faced heavy criticism and there has been a significant increase in the number of payment protection insurance claims.

In 2010 Black Horse joined a growing number of companies taking the decision to no longer sell Black Horse loan protection cover. For many companies selling the cover is simply no longer viable. Payment protection once generated more income than the interest from the loans to which it was attached, but, since the mis-selling scandal broke, many lenders have been forced to pay out millions of pounds in compensation.

One reason why the payment protection scandal has been so wide reaching is because there are a significant number of ways in which the cover can be mis-sold. As a general rule, failures at the point of sale usually fall into two categories.

  1. The customer was given incomplete, incorrect or misleading information. This can include not being given full information regarding the costs of the policy, being given only information regarding the policy terms or being told you had to have the cover.
  2. The customer was sold a policy that was unsuitable for their needs or that they were ineligible to use. Not everyone needs PPI or can be covered by it. Examples here include customers who have policies in place elsewhere or those over the age of sixty-five who cannot normally be covered.
