Do I Have to Have Payment Protection

One of the questions we often hear at the PPI Claim Company is in regards to whether or not consumers have to have payment protection insurance on their loans or on revolving lines of credit (credit cards). It is not uncommon to hear, "Do I have to have payment protection insurance?" Actually, there is a simple one word answer to that and it is, "No!" You do not need payment protection, it is not required by law and it is illegal for a lender to make you carry payment protection. The lender, of course, can deny extending credit to you if you have less than a satisfactory credit score, but qualifying for a loan is not to be contingent upon carrying payment protection insurance. If your lender told you it was and coerced you into buying a policy then it is within your right to claim back PPI.

Do I Have to Have Payment Protection If I Am Self Employed?

Another common question that claims experts hear quite often is "Do I have to have payment protection if I am self employed?" This is actually a very good question. Some consumers have stated that the lender told them that self employed persons are more of a credit risk as there may be times when income cannot be verified. This is absolutely against the rules and it is also a terrible way to mis sell PPI. As a matter of fact, the self employed person is not eligible for payment protection under the exclusions on the contract and since there would be no cover it is illegal to knowingly sell self employed individuals payment protection insurance.

Do I Have to Have Payment Protection the Lender Is Selling?

This is another one of the most commonly asked questions that people come to us with because the lender told them they must buy the insurance being offered through them. If you are told this then you are being lied to. According to UK laws pertaining to competition, you are free to carry PPI with whatever insurance company you choose. In fact, if you already have comparable cover then you should not be asked to buy another policy anyway! One of the exclusions on PPI policies is redundancy.

Do I have to have payment protection of any kind? No, no and again no, you do not have to have payment protection insurance.
