Missold PPI Insurance

If you have taken out any kind of loan protection insurance or payment protection cover on a credit or store card you may have been missold PPI insurance and may be entitled to make a claim. There are approximately 20 million active policies in the UK and it is unknown how many of these may have been mis-sold, but some estimates put the figure at 2 million.

Types of mis-selling

There are a variety of different ways in which PPI may be mis-sold. Common examples include where policies are added without the customer's knowledge and where customers are given misleading or inaccurate information regarding the cover. If your lender failed to make you fully aware of the terms and conditions of your policy, for example, this may be deemed as mis-selling or if your lender only emphasised the positive aspects of your cover and failed to mention the exemptions. You may also have been missold PPI insurance if you were sold a policy you could not use or did not need. Examples here would be if you were sold aged 65 or over and were sold a policy as most policies do not cover people in this age catagory. Another example would be if you were in full time education when you were sold your policy as you would have no need for a policy to cover loss of employment.

What Is Being Done about Missold PPI Insurance

In approximately 2005 the Citizens Advice Bureau registered a complaint against lenders in the UK as a result of tens of thousands of complaints pouring in regarding the abuse of selling payment protection insurance to consumers who either couldn't use it or didn't know they had loan insurance. It was found that lenders were selling loan insurance to people who were quite obviously excluded from cover which was spelled out in black and white on the policy and some salespeople were even adding PPI cover unbeknownst to the borrower. Since then great strides have been taken to rectify the situation. Now consumers can file a claim with their lenders to get a refund on any money that was spent on mis-sold PPI insurance.
