Credit Card PPI: Families 'lack incentive' to save
Many families in Britain are simply not attracted to the idea of saving money, but more should be done to encourage putting cash aside, an analyst has said.
David Kuo, director of financial website Motley Fool, responded to research published by Abbey which shows that 28 per cent of familes have no savings or investments to fall back on when times get tough.
He said: "The problem is that the attraction to save, in other words the interest you are earning on your money is not there. So therefore that's a huge disincentive for people.
"We have got out of the habit of saving money, so what we need now is to have a change of emphasis, for people to go from spending on their credit cards and going into debt, and switching that mentality into saving.
Earlier this week, research by Moneysupermarket.com found that many consumers could face a credit hangover next year, with three in ten credit card users not expecting to pay back their festive spending for six months.
