Bank Charges: Charity calls for action on debt

Citizens Advice Scotland (CAS) is calling for politicians to do more for people struggling with debt in the country.

Its call comes as the charity releases statistics profiling levels of debt in each Scottish constituency.

Those struggling with debts who have been mis-sold PPI insurance or unfairly charged by banks can alleviate their situation by making a PPI claim or bank claim.

Kaliani Lyle, chief executive of CAS, said: What these figures reveal is a picture of real misery for many people. Large numbers of our population are struggling just to get by.

"We call for better regulation of lenders and more affordable sources of credit."

Earlier this week, research by the Trades Union Congress (TUC) showed that average household debt grew from 45 per cent in 1980 to 157 per cent in 2007.
