PPI Charges: Banks withholding vital funds from businesses

Banks are being accused of failing to provide finance to British businesses which are in dire need of extra capital.

A report released by the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) today says that 33 per cent of companies have found accessing finance more difficult over the past three months.

This compares unfavourably with June, when only one in five businesses felt access to finance had worsened.

The Bank of England recently embarked on a new phase of quantitative easing designed to kick start lending in the economy, with an additional £200 billion of capital being pumped through the financial system.

Today's report has sparked fears that banks' unwillingness to lend is damaging the quantitative easing programme.

The BCC is calling on the government to suspend National Insurance payments to help small businesses.

Last week, lenders asked the Financial Services Authority (FSA) not to re-open thousands of claims of unfair bank charges.
