Credit Card PPI: Claims against banks to become easier

The government is preparing legislation which would make it simpler to claim damages against banks and allow consumers to group together to take on financial institutions, Reuters reports today (November 16th).

Under the new rules, the Financial Services Authority (FSA) will be able to do more to assist people claiming against banks.

Rather than courts having to assess each individual claim separately, law suits against a bank for mis-selling or unfair charges would be considered collectively.

This would put consumers in a more powerful position and reduce the cost of taking action against mistreatment by banks.

The changes are likely to form part of the Queen's speech this Wednesday, which is expected to focus particularly on improving financial regulation.

Action to regulate bankers' bonuses is also expected to be announced in the speech.
