Bank Refunds: Top banker warns government on regulation

The boss of a major bank has called on the government not to introduce new regulation for the financial services sector, arguing that it could have an impact on the UK economy as a whole.

Peter Sands, chief executive of Standard Chartered Bank told the Daily Telegraph that banks would simply pass on the additional cost of regulation to consumers.

He said: "The reality is that a lot of that incremental cost will just get passed on to their customers in terms of increased pricing. This is not a risk-free, cost-free game here."

The government is expected to introduce new rules this week allowing the FSA to curb bankers' bonuses and intervene to support people who have launched claims against banks, for example over mis-sold payment protection insurance.
