PPI: Post Office launches 'People's Bank'
The Post Office is set to launch a new bank which could rival well-known high street names, under government plans unveiled today.
Running from its network of local branches, it would offer a wide range of accounts including options for savings, business secretary Lord Mandelson announced.
Currently, a number of financial services are available from the Post Office through an agreement with the Bank of Ireland, although the government hopes to greatly expand this offering.
Banks have provoked anger by refusing to pay back bank charges which customers felt were unfairly levied, and were supported by a recent Supreme Court ruling which could save them billions of pounds.
The People's Bank wants to use this anger as an opportunity to get a foothold in the market, as one of the first new products it launches will be a current account with very low charges and penalties compared to high-street retail banks.
