Charged for payment protection without being covered

A consumer was driven into debt by payment protection insurance (PPI) on his Barclaycard credit card without being fully covered by the policy.

The individual wrote to the Independent's financial advice pages after it became clear that large monthly fees for PPI were the main reason for accruing debt.

However, as the consumer was over the age of 65, the cover offered through the PPI policy was significantly reduced and thus it had been mis-sold, as this was not communicated when it was originally arranged.

Although Barclaycard promised to refund four years' worth of premiums, worth £864, customers should also be entitled to get back the interest paid on their PPI

Customers who have been mis-sold PPI should also receive a goodwill payment equivalent to the interest had it been invested profitably elsewhere, reflecting the fact they had not been properly covered.

Last week, it emerged that a group of organised criminals were using PPI payments as part of an elaborate fraud which was uncovered by the Serious Organised Crime Agency.
