PPI Charges: Darling decides against bonus windfall tax
Chancellor of the exchequer Alistair Darling has announced that he will not be levying a windfall tax in the government's pre-budget statement today (December 9th).
However, he has announced a 50 per cent charge levied on bonuses which banks, rather than their employees, will have to pay.
It will be applied to bonuses worth over £25,000, and the money will be channelled into assisting young people find work and helping pensioners.
This week, it emerged that banks' lawyers were working around the clock to find potential loopholes so that bankers could find ways around a windfall tax if it was applied.
Elsewhere in his speech, the chancellor confirmed that VAT would be rising back to 17.5 per cent from January 1st 2010 as planned.
Last week it was revealed that the Royal Bank of Scotland intended to pay out more than £1.5 billion in bonuses this Christmas, which was followed by a row about bonuses in the financial services sector.
