Loan Charges: Bankers 'would have avoided windfall tax'

Bankers have said they would have attempted to get around any windfall tax on their bonuses applied by the government.

Chancellor Alistair Darling was expected to apply a one-off tax to bankers' bonuses in the government's pre-budget report today (December 9th) but decided against the move.

Firms had already been looking into ways of dodging any windfall levy, with one option being altering employees' contracts so they are defined as consultants, thus escaping the tax.

Banks were also considering increasing the value of fringe benefits paid to senior bankers, such as paying for their children's private school fees.

Lawyers and accountants were looking for potential loopholes in windfall tax proposals and preparing court challenges to the tax in case it had been levied.

Last week, Barclays announced that it would be giving pay rises of as much as 150 per cent to senior staff, taking many salaries above £300,000.
