Bank Charges: Liberal Democrats criticise scrapping of cheques
The Payment Council's decision to phase out the use of cheques is "scandalous" and "self-serving", an MP for the Liberal Democrat party has claimed.
It was revealed this week that banks would stop providing their customers with the facility to write and cash cheques by 2018.
However, Mark Hunter, MP for Cheadle, is leading a parliamentary campaign to save the payment type, which he claims many people rely on.
"This is a scandalous, self-serving decision that puts the whims of City fat cats ahead of the needs of this country's most vulnerable people," he said.
"Scrooge-like bankers had the chance to start putting customers first once again, but they have well and truly failed."
Mr Hunter explained that many elderly, housebound and disabled people rely on cheques for payment, and will be "massively inconvenienced" by their removal.
During a recession, the move could also see more people suffering at the hands of unfair bank charges if they are unable to find the means to pay their debts in time.
However, PayPal has welcomed the decision, claiming that its service offers a ready-made alternative for those people who are used to paying and cashing cheques.
