Bank charges: Future of British banking to be debated
A new taskforce has been established to provide a focus for the public debate on Britain's banking system and how it could be improved in the future.
One topic of conversation for MPs David Davis, John McFall and Vince Cable - who will be joining forces with Which? to launch the Future of Banking Commission - could be bank charges, which have been a hot topic of debate recently.
The commission was conceived following a proposal by Mr McFall to put the public at the heart of a reformed banking system and consider ways how it could be made more progressive.
Peter Vicary-Smith, chief executive of Which?, said that most of the debate on banking since the financial crisis started has taken place from the perspective of bankers.
"It seems ludicrous that past banking inquiries have ignored those who have been hit hardest by the banking crisis - the ordinary people and the wider interests of society," he said.
"This is an opportunity to right that wrong. We believe that this commission is needed to restore trust between the public and the banks."
Recently, research by Which? indicated that 80 per cent of people do not believe banks have done enough to ensure that the UK avoids suffering another credit crunch in the future.
