PPI Claim News - 29/12/2009

Bank charges could remain prevalent in 2010

Bank charges could remain a large risk factor for many consumers in the year ahead, with just one in five expecting the economy to mount a recovery in 2010.

That is according to research by Gocompare.com, which suggested that only one in five Brits expect the UK to come out of recession early in the New Year.

In fact, more than half expected that financial difficulties would remain for much of the year ahead; something that could push many unauthorised their overdrafts and subsequently leave them with bank charges.

Britain is now officially the only G20 country still in recession and almost a third (29 per cent) of consumers expect it will remain in such a state for all of 2010.

Lee Griffin, business development director at Gocompare.com, said: "News that the UK is now the only major world economy still in recession will only reinforce most people's belief that this recession is a long way from being over."

"Whilst the Government would like us to spend our way out of recession we would stress that it's important for consumers to spend wisely."

Last week, meanwhile, it was reported that employees at failed bank Lehman Brothers would sill receive end-of-year bonuses.
