Bank claim: President considers bonus levy

President Barack Obama is considering the option of a one-off bank tax following the UK government's decision to levy a charge last month on bank employees' bonus payments.

The US government has supported the country's banking sector to the tune of $700 billion (£430 billion) and a desire to recoup money for the taxpayer is thought to be behind the plans.

In recent weeks, major US banks have announced bumper profits and revealed huge bonus payouts to senior executives, sparking public anger and debate.

The president's press secretary, Robert Gibbs, confirmed that plans were being discussed at the highest levels but did not announce any further details.

It is thought that rather than levying tax on bonuses directly, the US levy may be applied instead to bank profits.

This week, the Irish Times reported that many financial services companies were rewarding their staff with higher salaries instead of paying bonuses.
