Payment Protection Claim: Recession 'increases fraud levels'
The average person is being defrauded of nearly £2,500 as the recession leads to an increase in fraudulent transactions, a financial expert has claimed.
Statistics from life assistance company CPP revealed an extra three million people have become victims of fraud over the past two years, a rise of six per cent, with the average person losing £2,420.
Commenting on the statistics Sarah Blaney, card fraud expert at CPP, said the rise in credit and debit card crime appears to have been worsened as people "fail" to access finance from the banks.
Over the last 12 months alone, 39 per cent of people reported fraud, over one-third of which were hit by fraudsters on the internet.
Ms Blaney said online fraud is increasing rapidly as fraudsters try to escape the restrictions of security technology such as chip and pin, which has hampered the traditional methods of card fraud.
She advised online shoppers to be on their guard. Tell-tale signs of fraudulent websites include spelling mistakes and the absence of the secure sign, which is displayed on the screen as a locked padlock.
"If you think there is anything suspicious then just leave the site immediately," she added.
