Bank charges: Lord Myners joins G7 to 'tackle the banks'

Lord Myners, the city minister, is today meeting with the G7 in Downing Street to discuss reforms for the banking system.

The representatives from the world's seven largest economies are expected to discuss global strategies to regulate the banks and ensure that taxpayers are protected from future bail-out situations.

"Excessive" bankers' bonuses are also expected to be a talking point for the Treasury.

The G7 will look at the amount banks currently pay out to staff as a proportion of revenue and are expected to suggest a system where more of the industry’s profits can be used to generate capital.

Lord Myers has previously stated that he is against the notion of bankers being paid large bonuses despite the public bailout using taxpayers' money.

Last week President Obama announced radical reforms for US banks, which included an extensive list of changes.

The UK government has stated that British reforms need to be considered carefully and in isolation.
