Bank Charges: Barclays' 'shameless' bonus bonanza
Barclays bank is to dish out millions of pounds in staff bonuses after reporting bumper profits for 2009.
The company, which is Britain's second largest bank, is expected to handout £95,000 each to its top performers, taking their annual salary to a cool £191,000.
The revelation comes after the bank reported profits of £11.6 billion yesterday, a 92 per cent increase in year-on-year figures, despite the global economic crisis.
However, according to newspaper reports in the Mirror, the "bonus bonanza" will add insult to injury to the 2,500 staff axed from its local branches.
Liberal Democrat shadow chancellor Vince Cable told the news provider he believes "bankers are utterly shameless".
The bonus handout is likely to cause resentment with smaller businesses, which have been forced to turn to credit cards in the face of the global credit crunch.
In its poll of 1,000 businesses, the Institute of Directors found that one in four firms had applied for a bank loan, but over 60 per cent were refused access to finance.
