Payment Protection Reclaim: Lack of credit is fuelling fraud, says expert
A lack of available consumer credit is fuelling the number of identity frauds, one expert has claimed.
Fraudscape, a report published yesterday by the UK's fraud prevention service CIFAS, showed that the number of identity frauds, including false identity and identity theft, jumped by 31.79 per cent year-on-year in 2009.
Commenting on the statistics, Neil Munroe, external affairs director of personal finance consultants Equifax, says it is a sign that even criminals are having difficulty getting credit in the recession.
He said rather than setting up new accounts, crooks are opting for "account takeover" so they do not have to apply directly through the banks.
"Fraudsters have had to adapt to a tightening of new credit and are therefore trying to find money from existing credit agreements.
"Fraudsters are adapting to the current economic climate," reveals Mr Munroe.
Fraudscape also revealed that the final quarter of the year seemed to produce the highest level of incidents, peaking at almost 30,000 cases, up from around 23,000 in Q3.
