Credit card charges: Attitudes towards plastic 'must change'
Consumer attitudes towards credit cards need to change if people are to avoid credit card charges in the future.
That is according to the Association of British Credit Unions Limited, which warned that an over-reliance on plastic is leaving many consumers facing spiraling debts and ensuring they cannot save for the future.
Mark Lyonette, chief executive of the trade body, explained that the allure of credit cards is that they are "fabulously convenient", but added that most credit unions look at them as a less-than-sound financial product.
Speaking of the risk at the Northern Money Conference 2010 in Liverpool, he said: "You are seen as an excellent customer so as long as you are meeting the minimum repayments.
"With minimum repayments, you could be on your tenth card and gradually leveraging yourself to the point where you are going to explode."
This week, Credit Action reported that UK personal debt stood at £1,463 billion at the end of January 2010, an increase of 0.8 per cent over the preceding 12 months.
