Bank charges: £480m in reclaims still up for grabs
Consumers could be entitled to claim as much as £480 million in bank charges despite the recent Supreme Court ruling in favour of banks.
That is according to the Telegraph, which explains that people could be successful in making a bank reclaim if they can show that they have suffered financial hardship.
Although this does not affect the validity of the charges, it could result in banks and lenders being more lenient - particularly at a time when unemployment is at its highest level in over a decade.
In fact, all major banks have agreed to the Lending Code, which stipulates that they must be fair and considerate to those who are struggling with their finances.
A spokesperson from the Financial Ombudsman Service told the newspaper: "Genuine financial hardship is where the consumer's income is insufficient to cover reasonable living expenses and meet financial commitments."
Last week, the Fraudscape report published by fraud prevention service CIFAS revealed there has been a rise in the number of cases of identity theft because of the lack of available credit to consumers.
