Bank Charges: Brown proposes bank levy ahead of election
In what could be his final political move ahead of the 2010 general election, Gordon Brown cemented his desire for a global bank levy.
Speaking in London, the prime minister said "a levy on banks seems likely to be the most practical approach" in raising capital for cash-strapped governments around the world.
As part of a four point plan, he recommended that "proceeds should be for national governments to use, whether to put them aside in a dedicated insurance fund, to repay interventions or to reduce public debt".
The prime minister has come under increasing pressure from the public to push through radical reforms of the banking sector.
His latest suggestion follows the campaign initiated by a host of British celebrities and global charities, known as the Robin Hood Tax, which proposed a 0.05 per cent levy on international transactions.
The small tax could potentially generate billions of pounds which would be directed to governments, local authorities, charities, emergency services, community projects and humanitarian causes.
