Credit Card charge rules not strict enough, says expert
The new rules for credit card loans as unveiled by the government yesterday are just a "baby step" in the right direction, an expert has claimed.
Chris Tapp, director of financial education charity Credit Action, said that although he welcomed the changes, which include a measure to ensure the most expensive debt on credit cards is paid off first, he does think that more stringent measures are needed.
He said: "The government, in our view, is taking a step in the right direction but only really a baby step. We don't think they have gone as far as we would have liked to [have] seen them go.
"In terms of it being an opportunity to really overhaul the way that the credit card market works, it is a slightly more piecemeal reform from the fundamental change that we think is needed."
He went on to reveal the changes the organisation would have liked to have seen implemented under the legislation.
These included the need for a stronger line against unsolicited rises in credit limits and more elaborate reforms to the minimum payment system.
