Credit cards are used by over 295,000 people in the north west to pay their rent or mortgage every month.That is according to a survey by the homelessness charity Shelter, which found that people constantly struggling with their housing costs.Vanessa Dixon, regional manager of Shelter North West, said: "Keeping a roof over their head has become a daily struggle for thousands across the north west."Using credit cards to pay the rent or mortgage is simply robbing Peter to pay Paul. With the average credit card interest rate now standing at over 16 percent it is the worst possible course of action."She added that this situation is unsustainable and people may eventually be pushed into a spiral of debt that could end up in homelessness.Across the UK, over two million people use credit cards to pay for their homes, which is an increase of almost 50 per cent compared to 2009.Amir Hussain Amir specialises in personal loans, consumer debt and debt management.
