The reality of spending money on a Christmas families could ill afford often hits home in January.Such is the opinion of David Rodger, managing director of the Debt Advice Foundation, a provider of free and impartial debt advice.Mr Rodger claims that debt tends to be amounted over November and December and then the reality of the money borrowed takes effect in January when bills begin to arrive. He said: "Many people begin to struggle when interest free periods on store cards they've maxed out end and higher monthly credit card payments [are] due."Worse still is that families may go without basic essentials, or avoid paying priority bills, as their cash is sucked away by debts."His comments follow research by MyVoucherCodes.co.uk, which found that January is the month when people are most likely to turn to borrowing to ease their financial woes.It found that 26 per cent of those who borrowed last year did so in January.Samantha ClarkeSamantha is a former banking assistant and has over ten years experience in retail banking.
