Santander has announced its profits were up 11 per cent last year, despite the bank experiencing a decline in the amounts it lends in mortgages and takes in savings deposits. The bank revealed it boosted its pre-tax profit in the UK to £2.3 billion, reports thisismoney.co.uk.This announcement also comes in spite of reports of poor customer service, with the Financial Services Authority revealing there were 216,158 complaints made against the bank between January and July 2010.In December last year, the bank also managed to send 35,000 wrong bank statements to its customers following a "technical error" at the printers.Prior to this incident, Alison Brittain, retail director at Santander, told the Financial Mail: "We can't compete long term if we don't deliver decent service standards. It's as important to us as offering best-buy products."We need to offer good service. Giving good customer service is part of our job."Samantha ClarkeSamantha is a former banking assistant and has over ten years experience in retail banking.
