Loan repayments: Men's pensions could be reduced under new gender rules

Under new gender rules men's pensions could be reduced, an expert has said.

Tom McPhail, head of pensions research at Hargreaves Lansdown, a financial service company based in Bristol, claims that men's pensions could fall "substantially".

He said: "The European Court may be taking the view that to use gender as a differentiator and a way of determining someone's life expectancy is discriminatory and should be banned.

"What would that mean? It would mean that men's annuity rates would fall, and potentially fall quite substantially – five to ten per cent."

Mr McPhail added that if the European Court does decide to go ahead then from March 1st (when the final judgement is expected), the UK will have to work on unisex annuity rates.

Matthew Vincent, the personal finance editor of the Financial Times, added that this decision could wipe hundreds of millions of pounds off of the income paid out to UK pension investors.
