Loan insurance: Hike in interest rates 'would impact buyer confidence'

People seeking out loan insurance may be interested to hear that an expert believes increasing interest rates would impact upon buyer confidence.

Jim Munson, head of marketing at Metropolitan Home Ownership, claims that a hike in interest rates may increase the cost of borrowing at a time when living costs are increasing.

He said: "As well as having a direct cost implication for borrowers, I think rising interest rates will also impact on buyer confidence.

"Of course, the counter-point is that rising interest rates may also bring down prices, which might lower the ladder for many who have previously been priced out."

Mr Munson added that there are signs that the first-time buyer mortgage market, for those looking at intermediate housing market products, is improving.

He believes that this is an encouraging sign for customers who can manage costs, but who do not have a large lump sum saved or support from their parents.
