People could avoid credit card charges by setting up direct debits that make minimum payments. That is according to Michelle Whiteman, spokesperson for The UK Cards Association, the trade association for the cards industry in the UK, encompassing debit and credit and charge cards. Ms Whiteman claims that it is very important for consumers to shop around for a card that best suits their needs. She said: "It is important that when customers are considering a card they must do their research and shop around to select a card that best suits both their needs and their plans for how they intend to use [it]. "Setting up a direct debit for at least the minimum repayment is a sensible idea as it helps you to avoid any late payment fees." Ms Whiteman added that it is now easier to compare the different benefits of various cards because of the standardised summary box that is made available on all credit card marketing materials.
