Loan protection: Cost of mortgages 'to increase'

Those seeking out loan protection may be interested to hear that the cost of mortgages will eventually increase.

That is according to Ben Wilkie, editor at What Mortgage, a website aimed at prospective house purchasers, borrowers transferring between lenders or types of mortgage, or those involved in buy-to-let.

Mr Wilkie claims that many homeowners are unprepared for the way in which an increase in interest rates will affect their mortgage.

In terms of preparing for increasing interest rates, Mr Wilkie suggests people make sure they are aware of market happenings.

He said: "It is a case of just keeping an eye on what the market is doing. People are looking to protect themselves against future [interest] rate rises.

"Eventually mortgages are going to start costing more, so a lot more people are now looking to fix their rate and protect themselves against those increases."

According to the Council of Mortgage Lenders, gross mortgage lending in February was an estimated £9.5 billion.
