Credit card charges: Inflation up to 4.4% in February
Inflation rose to 4.4 per cent in February, which may come as bad news to those currently struggling with credit card charges.
This is an increase of 0.4 per cent compared to January and was above initial estimates by economists, who predicted inflation would rise to 4.2 per cent.
Hetal Mehta, an analyst at Daiwa Capital Markets, said: "Inflation has jumped to its highest since October 2008, putting the Bank of England under even greater pressure to demonstrate its commitment to hitting its inflation target by hiking interest rates.
"And this pressure will no doubt intensify as higher commodity prices feed through in the coming months, taking inflation to around five per cent."
This news follows research by the Institute for Fiscal Studies, which found that real household incomes have fallen by 1.6 per cent in the three years between 2008 and 2011, meaning households are, on average, £360 worse off.
