Loan charges: Brits borrowing to improve homes

An increasing number of Brits may be at risk of experiencing loan charges because more people are borrowing money to pay for home improvements.

According to a report by Sainsbury's Finance, one in five of all personal loans taken out are used solely to pay for home improvements.

Steven Baillie, head of loans at Sainsbury's Finance said: "For those thinking of applying for a personal loan … it's imperative that they shop around to get the best rate as it could save them a considerable amount in repayments.

"The repayment terms can also differ depending on which provider you choose, and you should also look into any other possible benefits that are available to you."

Sainsbury's Finance estimated that over the course of 2010, the total value of personal loans taken out by UK consumers was almost £3.2 billion.

Home improvements made up 20.2 per cent of the total value of personal loans taken out in the UK in 2010.
