Credit card charges: Women in north east 'most affected by recession'

Women in the north east of the country may be more likely to have experienced credit card charges over the last few years, as this group has been most affected by the recession and government cuts.

According to research by the Trades Union Congress (TUC), the number of women in employment in this area dropped by 5.09 per cent between 2007 and 2011.

Neil Foster, northern TUC policy and campaigns officer, said: "These figures are further proof that the coalition government's disastrous economic policies increasingly hit those who did the least to cause the banking crash.

'It is both ethically wrong and economically absurd that the livelihoods of 34,000 north east women have been sacrificed to pay for a crisis not of their making."

He added that the TUC is concerned that this number will increase as the government's cuts "deepen and destroy" jobs in the public and voluntary sectors.
