Credit card charges: Consumers paying out for airline debit surcharges

People who are currently paying out credit card charges may be among those who also have to fork out for debit card surcharges to airlines.

According to research by Which?, consumers are paying £265,000 every day in airline debt surcharges, even though the Office for Fair Trading ruling that they should be banned.

Since the ruling on June 28th, consumers have paid out an estimated £18 million in airline debit card surcharges collectively.

Richard Lloyd, executive director the magazine that campaigns for consumer rights, said: "With most airlines yet to drop these card surcharges and some introducing new fees, it's time for the government to put a stop to this.

"A minor change to the law is all it would take to ban the charges on debit cards that you only find out about at the end of a lengthy on-line booking process."

He added that the government must take action so consumers can compare the cost of flights easily.
