PPI Claims: Older workers 'no longer forced to retire'

PPI claims may be able to prevent people working after the age of 65.

A change to the employment laws means people will be able to able to work after their 65th birthday without fear of being fired.

Age UK noted the Default Retirement Age had effectively meant employers could sack people purely because of their age, but it is being abolished on October 1st.

"With an ageing population traditional rigid ideas about retirement are changing. Many people will want to work longer for personal or financial reasons and prejudice should not lock them out of the workplace," said the charity's Michelle Mitchell.

Ms Mitchell thinks UK employers are not hiring enough older staff and she is particularly worried about the number of people who have been out of work for more than two years.

Katja Hall, the Confederation of British Industry's chief policy director, said the regulatory changes are "simply counter-productive".ADNFCR-2776-ID-800746004-ADNFCR
