PPI Claims: Households 'struggling with energy bills'

Payment protection refunds could provide the financial assistance consumers in the UK may need to be able to afford to keep their heating on this winter.

An average increase of £224 in the cost of people's energy bills this year has meant more people in the UK now worry about the price of their gas and electricity consumption than the costs of their mortgage, according to new research from uSwitch.com.

The anxiety has meant 89 per cent of the UK population will ration the amount of fuel they use this winter.

Ann Robinson, the site's director of consumer policy, said the notion that seven million people in the UK living in fuel poverty was alarming.

She stated the "impact on health and quality of life could not be underestimated".

Recent research from Friends of the Earth found that 90 per cent of people would welcome an inquiry into the business practices of energy firms.
