Bank Claim: Rental costs 'being driven up'

Payment protection insurance claims may free up enough spare cash for tenants to cope with rent prices that are historically high.

Tenants in London are seeing their monthly rates increase as demand in the rental market continues to grow, said director of Ludlowthompson.com Stephen Ludlow.

He attributed the increase in rental popularity to the fact that many potential first-time buyers can no longer afford the deposit that is required by banks to secure a mortgage deal to buy a property.

New homes cannot be built to alleviate the problem as banks are "unwilling to lend to property developers", Mr Ludlow added.

The expert believes the financial situations tenants find themselves in will only get worse as rental rates are set to increase in the future.

Homeowners are also feeling the effects of the economic climate, as new research from Shelter shows between now and Christmas 35,000 people could be threatened by home repossession.   ADNFCR-2776-ID-800786721-ADNFCR
