Credit cards charges: One in ten to use credit cards this Christmas

One in ten people will turn to their credit card or store card to pay for Christmas shopping this year - potentially increasing the number of credit card charges they are subjected to in 2012.

According to MoneySupermarket.com, the figure is a marked reduction in the number planning on using credit to pay for Christmas presents when compared to last year.

The price comparison website claims that the reason for the fall is that consumers are starting to get more savvy.

According to the website, 8.4 per cent of those surveyed about their Christmas spending habits claimed that they are already paying money into a regular saving scheme to cover the cost of gifts.

Just 4.4 per cent claimed they would use their overdraft, but a similar number said they were unsure how they were going to fund the increased expenditure.

Kevin Mountford, head of banking at MoneySupermarket.com, said: "The golden rule of festive spending is to know how much you have available and then stick to your budget, or you could be left in the cold paying off Christmas well into the New Year."

Recently, Lovemoney.co.uk claimed that high interest rates - and other credit card charges - could be behind a fall in credit card use this Christmas.
