PPI Claims: Unemployment 'to rise'

British households may need to use payment protection claims and credit card refunds to help them avoid further money concerns in the future.

Many families are already struggling with the high cost of living and low incomes that have been widespread since the banking crisis, but recent developments in the eurozone could see the UK's economic situation deteriorate further.

Recent troubles in Greece and Italy have caused the European Commission to reduce its economic growth forecast for the eurozone from 1.8 per cent to 0.5 per cent and there are fears the circumstances could become worse.

Consequently, unemployment in the UK could rise to 8.6 per cent, stated the commission's report.

"This forecast is in fact the last wake-up call. The recovery in the EU has come to a standstill and there is a risk of a new recession," said Olli Rehn, the European Union's economic and monetary affairs commissioner.

According to Credit Action, there are 867,000 people in the UK who have been out of work for more than a year.
