Payment protection refunds and credit card claims could provide families who feel they have no extra money to spend with the financial boost they need going into Christmas. Many households' budgets are now so stretched individuals feel they can no longer spend money on the high street and this feeling has been confirmed by Nationwide's consumer confidence index reaching an all-time low.The report found the index fell for the fifth month in a row in September and the organisation's chief economist Robert Gardner said he was not surprised by the findings."Pressures on household budgets have also intensified, with underlying wage growth running at less than half the rate of inflation," he added.Mr Gardner believes that the wider economic circumstances in the UK and the eurozone were a factor. The British Retail Consortium called on chancellor George Osborne to make tax changes to allow people to spend again, which could subsequently help stimulate growth in the economy.Amir HussainAmir specialises in personal loans, consumer debt and debt management.
