PPI Claims: Consumers 'should not borrow money at Christmas'

People who are finding it hard to accumulate the extra money they need to fund their Christmas shopping this year could check to see if they are eligible to make a payment protection insurance (PPI) claim.

Dave Penny, managing director of Invest Southwest, has warned cash-strapped consumers the worst option available to them is to take out a high-interest loan.

He said that the banking crisis and the following recession have created some of the toughest economic conditions in a long time and households need to realise they cannot afford to rely on loans as they are the "road to ruin".

Families should also set aside time to create a budget and assess if they have enough disposable income to be able to buy presents and attend parties, Mr Penny added.

Recent research from Skipton Financial Services found that to have any surplus income households need to earn £32,702 a year to cover the cost of everyday bills and services.
