PPI Claims: Low income workers 'most affected by unemployment'

Low paid workers may want to check to see if they are eligible to make a payment protection insurance claim or assess whether they can receive a loan refund, as they may find it difficult to gain re-employment.

A new report from the Trades Union Congress has found that former machine operators, cleaners and caterers who have recently lost their jobs will spend more time claiming benefits than their higher-paid counterparts.

Since the start of the banking crisis and the following recession, the number of people on the dole who have been out of work for more than six months has increased from 29 per cent to 40 per cent, with people from elementary positions and machine operators being the worst affected.

Last month, the Confederation of British Industry said tackling the record level of youth unemployment – which currently stands at 19.1 per cent nationally - should be politicians' main priority.
