PPI Claims: Recession 'could be imminent'

More people could be checking to see if they are eligible to make a payment protection insurance claim next year as the fiscal windfall it provides could be a significant help to finances which are likely to be stretched.

Tim Drayson, Legal & General Investment Management's economist, stated that European and global economic problems in 2012 were likely to affect many British households and the UK faced the very real prospect of another recession.

"The euro area problems don't just affect Europe. Europe is a major trading area for … the UK. European banks have been major providers of credit to the global economy," he said.

He believes that the Office for Budget Responsibility's targets for economic growth are too optimistic and will not be reached.

Trevor Greetham, portfolio manager at Fidelity, recently stated that a recession in Europe will make the financial crisis in peripheral economies much worse.
