PPI claim news: PM aims to end 'excessive banker bonuses'

Consumers who have filed a payment protection insurance (PPI) claim in recent months have been reassured by the prime minister that poor performing bankers will not receive excessive rewards.

In his New Year address, David Cameron insisted that more will be done to ensure high fliers in the financial sector will not receive disproportionate bonus payments while other members of society struggle to make ends meet.

He said the government was committed to ending "excess in the city" and that Britain would get through the tough economic climate expected in 2012.

"While a few at the top get rewards that seem to have nothing to do with the risks they take or the effort they put in, many others are stuck on benefits," Mr Cameron commented.

The Association of British Insurers was expected to stage meetings between investors and bosses at the UK's top five banks in order to discuss ways to curb "out-of-control" bonus perks, the Daily Telegraph reports.
