PPI claims news: Energy bill hikes to impact finances

Homeowners who have lodged payment protection insurance (PPI) claims could be in desperate need of a speedy payout, as energy bills are set to cripple many people's finances in 2012.

According to moneysupermarket.com, 40 per cent of all annual power consumption is used in the winter months, which may leave many households counting the cost when their next quarterly bill arrives.

Gas prices recently went up by 17.4 per cent and electricity rates increased by 10.8 per cent at the same time. As well as this, three fixed rate tariffs offered by E. ON, British Gas and Scottish Power are all due to end soon, which could provide a nasty surprise for some customers.

"The start of a new year is an expensive time as consumers deal with a festive financial hangover - a huge energy bill will come as an additional nasty shock," commented utilities manager at the website Scott Byrom.

A recent study by uSwitch.com showed that 13 per cent of Britons will have no disposable income whatsoever once they have shelled out for energy bills in 2012.
