PPI claims news: Debt advice hotlines receiving more calls

Many people may wish to check if they are eligible to make a payment protection insurance (PPI) claim, as plenty of Britons have left themselves in a financial mess having overspent at Christmas.

According to managing director of the Debt Advice Foundation David Rodger, the number of calls received by the organisation doubles in January each year.

He said that in some cases, consumers are forced to borrow more money in order to cover their living expenses in the new year - a trend that he labelled "particularly worrying".

Indeed, Mr Rodger stated that taking out credit cards or payday loans in order to keep up with utility bills or rent payments is "not tackling the underlying problem".

"Every year, enquiries to the charity's debt advice helpline double in January, as the reality of overspending at Christmas hits home," he commented.

Homeless charity Shelter revealed this week that nearly one million homeowners and renters have been forced to take out payday loans in the past year in order to meet monthly mortgage and rent payments.
