UK consumers - many of whom may have been saddled with hefty bank charges in the past - saw their financial wellbeing grow slightly in the fourth quarter of 2011. According to newly released figures from Alliance Trust Savings, the outlook for cash-strapped Britons was slightly brighter in the final three months of the year, following a record decline in the company's UK Financial Reality Index in the third quarter. Indeed, the index rose from 56.7 to 62.1 between October and December, but this was still well below the critical point of 100. Senior economic analyst at the organisation Linsey Thompson said that conditions would be tough once again in 2012. "Household budgets continue to come under pressure from high inflation and muted wage growth, despite a rise in the index in Quarter Four," the analyst commented. MoneySupermarket.com recently revealed that the rising cost of utility bills remain the biggest concern for the majority of hard-up Britons.
