The former leader of the Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) Fred Goodwin has been stripped of his knighthood. Goodwin had been at the helm when the bank was forced to be bailed out by the government, which used taxpayers' money to keep the institution afloat. He had the honour bestowed upon him by the Labour government in 2004, but his poor decisions caused outrage, as he took the bank to the brink of a major collapse. It is a bold move by the Queen, who acted on the advice of Whitehall. Titles have only previously been revoked when a person has been convicted of a criminal offence or struck off by a professional body. A spokesperson for the Cabinet Office said the failure of RBS played an important role in the overall financial crisis that hit the UK in 2008. "The scale and severity of the impact of his actions as CEO of RBS made this an exceptional case," the spokesperson commented. Goodwin's successor Stephen Hester turned down a bonus of nearly £1 million this week.John FieldmanHaving worked in the city for 19 years, John's main focus is interest rates and corporate finance.
